Hi from Pete

I’m Pete, and I run In Between Beats. I started the blog because I love drums.

I love learning about the history of different drumming cultures, improving my playing and of course I love drum gear.

I’ve been playing for around 30 years in a range of genres and contexts - from small bars to international festivals. From teaching from my parents’ house, to recording in professional studios. I’m currently getting involved in the jazz scene in my local city.

I use In Between Beats to share thoughts and research with developing drummers. If you’re still developing in your drumming journey this site is for you.

I have played lots of different drums over the past 30 years, used electronic equipment like drum machines and samplers and the more functional accessories like cases and hardware. I’ve spent a lot of time understanding technical features through research and speaking to other drummers.

My reviews and advice on Inbetween Beats are based on this knowledge and experience. I hope I can help you to make the best equipment choices to get the sound you want and play in the context you want.

Outside of the drumming world I’m a psychologist.

I completed a PhD in psychology in 2016 and have been working as a behavioural scientist professionally since then.

With In Between Beats I’ll share my ideas about how psychology can teach us about how to be better drummers.

I hope you enjoy the site.
